研究领域:水稻遗传育种、水稻分子遗传学、水稻分子育种等。

中国工程院院士,水稻分子遗传与育种专家。长期从事水稻优异基因挖掘和分子育种研究,在国内较早提出和初步实践了作物分子设计育种。先后主持国家863、国家自然科学基金等多项重大课题。在水稻籼粳交杂种优势利用基础研究、品质优异基因挖掘、抗病虫新基因挖掘和优质高产多抗粳稻新品种选育等方面取得重要进展。克隆水稻重要新基因78个,培育新品种38个,获新品种权36项、发明专利71项。在CellScienceNatureNature BiotechnologySCI刊物发表论文310余篇,出版专著3部。作为第一完成人,研究成果获国家科技进步一等奖和国家技术发明二等奖各1项,入选教育部2010年度高校十大科技进展、2014年度高校十大科技进展和2014年度中国科学十大进展。2012年获得何梁何利基金科学与技术进步奖。2021年获中国植物生理与植物分子生物学学会杰出成就奖。2022年获袁隆平农业科技奖。2022年获得“九三楷模”荣誉称号。入选2022年“高被引科学家”名单和全球前2%顶尖科学家榜单。
